Bullycheck is a very simple concept. It requires employers to include a statement on their Employment Application form that the applicant consents to a school “Bullycheck”.
Employers will contact the senior school of applicants 22 years of age or younger to obtain a reference. The particular focus of the reference check will be participation, either at school or online in social media, in bullying, stalking or harassment of a repeat, systemic or serious nature.
Employers then contact the applicant’s high school (if they are aged 22 or younger) to obtain a verbal reference. The particular focus of the reference check will be participation, either at school or online in social media, in bullying, stalking or harassment of a serious nature.
Program Objectives
-
To assist schools and the greater community in deterring bullying, stalking and harassment, by educating students that participation in such behaviour will have consequences which may affect employment opportunities. This is an effort to educate students as a means to address these problems prior to events occurring. The message is to modify their behaviour and not participate in Bullying.
-
To protect registered clubs and businesses in general, from introducing bullies to the work place.
-
To further raise the profile of all anti-bullying stances.
Program Implementation

Secondary Colleges
School Boards adopt a policy that they will participate in the Bullycheck program.
School Principals then present to all students the following:
“ABC Secondary College has formed a partnership with employers such as local registered clubs, whereby reference checks are provided to these employers at the time of potential recruitment.
These checks pay particular attention to bullying, stalking and harassment, and will include social media integrity. In short, you must understand there are consequences if you participate in bullying behaviour, both inside and outside our school”.
School Principals provide a character reference on a current or past student when approached by employers.
Employers
Employers to include the following statement on their Employment Application form: “I understand that an offer of employment is subject to a reference check from my secondary school/college, including aspects of the BULLYcheck program, if I am 22 years of age or younger”.
Employers contact the senior school of applicants 22 years of age or younger to obtain a reference. The particular focus of the reference check will be bullying, stalking or harassment of a serious nature.
Program Support
ClubsNSW is funding anti-bullying workshops at schools participating in Bullycheck. These programs are independently run by a combination of people who were either bullied at school or whose children were targeted by bullies.
