NEW MEASURES TO GET TOUGH WITH ALCOHOL-RELATED VIOLENCE
The club industry has already taken a number of tough decisions which have seen the number of alcohol-related assaults at clubs fall during the last ten years. In fact, measures such as early lock-outs, drink limits after midnight and a stop on alcohol sales 30 minutes before closing are already common practice at registered clubs.

CLUBS PROVE THEIR SAFETY RECORD
Official police figures show that there has been no increase in alcohol related assaults in clubs during the past ten years, a decade in which the number of people joining NSW clubs increased by more than 50% or 1.85 million people.

The RACV City Club in Melbourne has been recognised as the best dining experience of any club in Australia in the inaugural National Chefs Table competition.

NSW COALITION TO PROTECT CLUB OUTDOOR AREAS AND CLUBS ON
CROWN LAND
The NSW Opposition has announced it will be introducing legislation capping rent increases for clubs on crown land at the annual CPI rate. It has also announced it will be introducing legislation recognising all existing outdoor smoking areas as compliant and unnecessary of amendment post the recent Supreme Court decision.

POLICE HAVE POWERS TO CRACK DOWN ON ROGUE VENUES
ClubsNSW says police already have sufficient powers to crack down on rogue operators within the hospitality industry where alcohol related violence is occurring.

CLUBSNSW REJECTS INTERNET GAMBLING OFFER
ClubsNSW can confirm it was approached, and rejected in June, a proposal from
Northern Territory
based bookmaker Centrebet, which sought its endorsement of a plan to establish betting terminals in clubs via personal computers and mobile phones.

SUPREME COURT DECISION ON PARTIALLY COVERED AREAS
ClubsNSW is of course disappointed with the decision handed down in the Supreme Court this morning. ClubsNSW believes that the successful introduction of the indoor smoking ban can be largely attributed to the establishment of outdoor areas.

ClubsNSW rejects outright the claim from the anti-smoking lobby that outdoor smoking areas have led to an increase in the number of people smoking.

OUTDOOR AREAS PREVENT SMOKERS MOVING TO THE FOOTPATH
ClubsNSW says any change in outdoor smoking area laws would force smokers to light up outside on the street. Both NSW Health and the Minister Assisting the Minister for Health (Cancer) have already publicly acknowledged the tremendous success of the indoor smoking bans with a virtual 100% compliance rate.

A $740,000 donation from clubs has helped the Westmead Hospital purchase cutting edge technology that allows doctors to operate on the brain of potential and actual stroke victims without needing to touch the outside of the head.

NSW clubs have suffered their worst financial year ever, with overall club income falling by $385 million during the financial year 2007/08. This represents a fall of 11% on the previous 12 months.

LOCALS WANTED TO WALK THE KOKODA TRACK
ClubsNSW is today travelling to the far
North Coast
, searching for young people wanting to walk the Kokoda Track. ClubsNSW Chairman Peter Newell OAM will spend the next two weeks criss crossing the state, encouraging people between the age of 16 and 22 to enter the Kokoda Youth Leadership Clubs Challenge.

The Trangie Bowling Club is quickly moving up the Club Industry ladder, scoring a personal visit from the boss of ClubsNSW. ClubsNSW Chairman Peter Newell OAM decided to travel to Trangie after the Club’s recent winning of the inaugural Spirit of the Bush award.

The search is on for 8 young Australians to walk the Kokoda Track in September this year. The Kokoda Youth Leadership Clubs Challenge will pay for 8 people from across Australia, and between the ages of 16 and 22, to fly to Papua New Guinea in late September.

In yet another sign of the changing demographics of clubs, a club from the Northern Beaches has for the first time ever been crowned the best in all NSW. Dee Why RSL, which has existed for more than 60 years just a few hundred metres from the sun and the surf of Dee Why Beach, was Friday evening declared the 2008 ClubsNSW Club of the Year.
