The NSW Government has launched a pilot of the digital driver’s licence upgrade, with the technology to support this being tested in a number of clubs ahead of a planned statewide rollout next year.
ClubsNSW attended Panthers Penrith today to help launch the pilot, joining The Hon. Jihad Dib MP (Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government), Ms Karen McKeown OAM MP (Member for Penrith) and Mr Greg Wells (Managing Director of Service NSW).
“The technology is safe and contactless, making it easier to sign in to venues and enjoy more time with friends and family on the other side of check-in,” said Minister Dib.
The upgraded licence allows customers to generate a secure QR code through the Service NSW app, which can be scanned by participating venues to verify a person’s age and identity.
Only the information required for the transaction is shared, giving customers greater control over their personal information while supporting secure and efficient entry processes.
ClubsNSW has welcomed the trial as an opportunity to explore how the technology may help clubs verify age and identity while continuing to meet regulatory obligations.
“We commend Minister Dib and the NSW Government for this initiative, which will streamline entry to registered clubs while giving patrons greater control over the personal information they share,” said ClubsNSW CEO Rebecca Riant.
“Clubs are required by law to verify details such as whether a person is aged 18 or over, and this upgrade will allow them to meet those obligations while better protecting the privacy of patrons.”
Critically, the technology being trialled by clubs supports their legislative obligations, including to maintain member, guest and temporary member records under the Registered Clubs Act 1976.
ClubsNSW thanks the clubs involved in the pilot and looks forward to engaging with these clubs and Service NSW as the pilot progresses.
