A scientist walks into a bar…

It’s not the start of a cheesy joke — it’s everyday life for Flynn Keevers, who splits his time between studying a Master of Precision Medicine and Genomics at the University of Sydney and working as a part-time duty manager at Club Condell Park.

Such is Flynn’s passion for cutting-edge medical research, he’s inspired the western Sydney venue to raise more than $20,000 for the Garvan Institute over the past 12 months through weekly raffles, donation boxes and benefit concerts.

“Because of my background, I wanted to highlight to our Club just how vital medical research really is,” Flynn explains.

“I recently suggested that we look into supporting it — which isn’t the mainstream area where clubs generally donate, but it’s an incredibly worthy cause that ultimately helps us all and relies heavily on the generosity of the public and businesses.”

Having recently completed a Bachelor of Medical & Health Science, Flynn knows firsthand how advancements in research have universal benefits.

“The mission of medical scientists and places like the Garvan Institute is to drive a future where all diseases can be prevented, treated or cured,” he says.

“Because of that, I was absolutely thrilled when our Board of Directors and management were so responsive to being part of this initiative.

“Our members have been fantastic supporters of this initiative, and we’re already looking forward to the future fundraising activities we have planned.”

While clubs are renowned for supporting a smorgasbord of impactful charities and community causes, Flynn hopes to see medical research become a focus area for the industry.

“Clubs can offer our communities great opportunities and genuinely make a big difference,” he adds.

“This has been a really positive step for our Club to be a part of, and I hope that one day, medical research can be routinely included in ClubGrants.”
