Laurieton United Services Club’s first female and youngest-ever president is bringing a fresh perspective.
Laurieton United Services Club has entered a new chapter with the appointment of its youngest-ever and first female president, April Saunders.
Taking on the role after serving on the Club’s Board since 2021, April brings experience from a range of advocacy roles and a passion for giving back to the local community.
April’s appointment comes at a time when more women are stepping into leadership positions across the club industry, helping shape the future of clubs through governance, strategic oversight and community leadership.
Creating stronger pathways for women into club leadership has also become an increasing focus within the industry.
April says her decision to run for president was driven by a desire to continue contributing to the community she calls home.
“I could see opportunities to build the Club further and I was keen to lead the Club forward into its next phase,” she says.
As president, April says her focus is on strengthening governance and risk management while ensuring the Club continues to meet the needs of its members and community.
While her appointment marks a significant milestone for the Club, April says it is important that leadership opportunities continue to be based on capability, experience and contribution.
“I’d like to think I’m bringing more to the role than just my gender,” she says. “My credentials and experience are what got me here.”
April says her appointment reflects the changing face of club leadership and the importance of boards reflecting the communities they serve.
“Over half of our members are female, and I’m proud to be the Club’s first female president while representing all members,” she says.
“It’s important to have diverse perspectives and experiences around the table because that ultimately leads to better decision-making.”
With deep community connections, Laurieton United Services Club plays an important role in the region, a responsibility April says she is proud to help steward.
“It’s not a role I take lightly,” she says. “This Club is deeply embedded in the community and has a long history of supporting Camden Haven and its residents. It’s a privilege to be trusted with that responsibility.”
