Purple Friday — Clubs Say No to Domestic Violence

Taking place on Friday, 8 May, Purple Friday is a state-wide initiative that brings registered clubs across NSW together to say no to Domestic and Family Violence (DFV).

Purple Friday is a state-wide social impact initiative that brings registered clubs across NSW together to say no to Domestic and Family Violence (DFV).

Aligned with Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, Purple Friday shines a spotlight on the club’s industry’s role in prevention, early intervention and community support — reinforcing that clubs are not just places to gather, but places that care.

Key DV Statistics

  • 1 in 4 women will experience domestic or family violence.
  • Over 50% of women seeking crisis accommodation are turned away each night.
  • Domestic and family violence in Australia is estimated to cost the economy approximately $26 billion annually — and victims bear nearly half of this cost.
  • 77 women and 26 children were lost to domestic violence in 2025.

What Is Purple Friday?

Purple Friday is a collective call to action for clubs to visibly demonstrate their commitment to ending Domestic and Family Violence.

On Friday, 8 May clubs across NSW will “turn purple” by:

  • Dressing staff in purple shirts, hats or badges
  • Decorating venues purple
  • Using digital screens, websites and social media to share awareness messages
  • Starting conversations about respect, safety and support within their communities

Together, these actions help amplify awareness, reduce stigma and encourage people to seek help when they need it.

Why It Matters

Domestic and Family Violence remains a significant issue across Australia. While the causes are complex, the solutions begin with community leadership, collaboration and early intervention.

Clubs across NSW have long played a vital role in this work — from providing safe, welcoming spaces and supporting local services, to hosting awareness campaigns and partnering with frontline organisations.

Purple Friday builds on this legacy, strengthening collective advocacy and reinforcing the message that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and supported.

Clubs Driving Change Through Purple Friday

Purple Friday began with Cherry Street Sports Club with clubs like Revesby Workers’ Club joining the initiative — leaders driving positive change and a shared commitment to Domestic and Family Violence prevention.
